Relationships Matter
IEE has been partnering with Arenac-Eastern High School for two years. During this time, the teachers have explored engaging strategies, intentional classroom conversations, creating anchor charts for visualizing thinking, and close and critical reading. This work has been supported by an instructional coach.
Katie Brokaw has been teaching ELA at Arenac-Eastern for two years. During this time, she has invested in to creating relationships with her students that extend beyond the lessons of her MAISA units or the novels they explore. Together with her students, Katie has been working to create enhanced social-emotional skills including problem-solving, utilizing humor, and risk-taking. Using strategically planned team-building activities, Katie engages students and builds critical skills students need to succeed outside the classroom. These activities may be small portions of her lessons, but the results are huge.
