Testing Simulations
Like it or not, our students have to work through benchmark assessments multiple times throughout the school year. Their scores often are used as a reflection of the teaching and learning taking place at a school. If students go into these tests without any prior practice, they might get overwhelmed and shut down instead of working hard to reach their full potentials.
IEE can provide skilled facilitators to help walk students through simulations of different testing environments. Students will understand what to expect when it comes time to take the actual benchmark assessment. They’ll practice sample problems, receive advice about test day, and set goals. Raising awareness about the importance of the test and practicing ahead of time can lead to increased student achievement. Average scores in multiple schools (including Reese Elementary and List Elementary in Frankenmuth) have increased after participation in these simulations.

Exploring Identity and Changing Negative Student Behaviors
We all have students in our classrooms that are easily triggered – it might be by a difficult math problem, a tense social interaction, or by internal frustrations bubbling over. These students can cause chain reactions in classrooms and ultimately throw teachers off their game. More and more, teachers are struggling to keep students focused and engaged so true learning can take place.
Kindergarten through 5th grade students at List Elementary School in Frankenmuth, Michigan identified themselves in many different positive ways (learner, friend, athlete, supporter, listener, brother, etc.) and the IEE facilitator helped them understand what behaviors they should exhibit so they are living into their true identities. No student wants to be known as a troublemaker; we can help shape student identities so they display positive behaviors that align with their core identities.
Let a trained IEE facilitator visit your school and your most difficult classrooms and see how exploring student identities can help shape their behaviors!

LEARNING WALKS AND INSTRUCTIONAL ROUNDS
On any given day, IEE has dozens of coaches in schools all across the state. One privilege for coaches is that they get to see great instruction taking place, and then share best practices between schools. Teachers are often living on an island within their building – they might go days with no other adult stepping foot into their classroom. So much can be gained by visiting colleagues’ classrooms and seeing students in action.
For one day (or more), let an IEE coach facilitate Learning Walks or Instructional Rounds so wonderful ideas can be shared between the teachers in your school. The teachers will visit other classrooms during their prep hours, or at lunch, or when a rotating sub provides some time for them to explore the other islands within their school walls. The IEE facilitator will provide background information, suggestions, and note-taking guides before the walkthroughs. After, the facilitator will lead a reflective conversation to help teachers capture their thoughts.
Learning Walks are more informal; teachers visit classrooms and check out what is displayed on the walls, how the desks are arranged, or how technology is being used. They can look for anything they might “steal” and utilize in their own classrooms. For Instructional Rounds, a focus area is identified – for example, they might look for and collect data around student engagement or search for “I can…” statements posted on whiteboards. The anonymous data helps provide a temperature check on any school-wide initiative and helps teachers understand how others are implementing these initiatives with fidelity. Newaygo Middle School and High School participated in both Learning Walks and Instructional Rounds during the 2018-’19 school year and the teachers and administrators learned a great deal from one another throughout the productive days.
